Avatars are great because it gives the site personality.
It's also great for the blogger as he or she spends a good amount of time to personalize his or her website and make the site more welcoming. I know personally, I did enjoy my time designing "myself" to be appropriately presentable. =)
Avators can also be used to enhance student achievment.
Talking avatars can be used to remind students about expectations for assignments, instructions for assignments, and etc. Students will most likely be intrigued by this unique gadget and visit the site frequently. This will give them an opportunity to use this site regularly, not only for "entertainment," but also for informational help/resources.

I agree with your comment about talking avatars. I don't think students would expect a picture of a dog to give them their homework assignment. Students frequently forget what their homework is and this is a crafty way to remind them.
